VdR to open its doors to public following Swiss Federal Council decision

Visions du Réel 2021

Visions du Réel will open its doors to the general public from Thursday 22 April to festival end on April 25. Over four days, the Festival will hold around 50 public screenings, showcasing films from the International, Burning Lights, National and Grand Angle Competitions.

The International Film Festival’s 52nd edition kicks off online 15 April with the opening ceremony, which will be broadcast live from the Usine à Gaz. Between 15 and 25 April, 142 new documentaries from 58 countries will be shown online and on-site.

“As the first festival in Switzerland (and one of the first internationally), we can take a step towards “normality”. We are thrilled to be able to welcome our audience back on-site for the second half of the Festival! After moving the Festival online within a very short time last year, we are now taking the opposite approach and going back to cinemas within a few days. The fact that we can celebrate the reopening of the theatres on our opening day is a wonderful surprise,” explains Emilie Bujès, the artistic director of Visions du Réel.

“All our preparations were aimed at making this Festival edition as virtual as necessary and as physical as possible. What seemed unthinkable just a few weeks ago is now becoming reality. Visions du Réel 2021 represents a new beginning for cultural encounters,” says Raymond Loretan, the Festival’s president.

Following yesterday’s decisions by the Swiss Federal Council, the International Film Festival Nyon has decided to open screenings to the general public from next week. The four screens of the Festival theatres Capitole, Grande Salle and Usine à Gaz will host around 50 screenings with a limitation in accordance with the health measures, from Thursday 22 April to Sunday 25 April. The programme includes the films of the International Competition, the Burning Lights Competition, the National Competition and the Grand Angle Competition, among others.

Detailed information on the programme, ticketing and precautionary measures will be communicated in the next few days on visionsdureel.ch. The 52nd edition of Visions du Réel is taking place in hybrid form from 15 to 25 April.
