The Last Shelter by Ousmane Samassekou
At the April 30 awards ceremony of CPH:DOX the winners of the six international competitions were announced, as well as the winner of the Eurimages Co-Production Development Award, valued at €20,000.
The winners are:
Dox:Award: The Last Shelter by Ousmane Samassekou (France/Mali/South Africa)
Special Mention: Our Memory Belongs to Us by Rami Farah and Signe Byrge Sørensen (Syria/Denmark/France/Palestine)
F:act Award: When a City Rises by Cathy Chu, Iris Kwong, Ip Kar Man, Huang Yuk-kwok, Evie Cheung, Han Yan Yuen and Jen Lee (Hong Kong)
Special Mention: All Light, Everywhere by Theo Anthony (US)
Nordic:Dox Award: Julia&I by Nina Hobert (Sweden)
Special Mention: He’s my Brother by Cille Hannibal and Christine Hanberg (Denmark)
New:Vision Award: All of Your Stars are but Dust on My Shoes by Haig Aivazian (Lebanon)
Special Mention: Listen to the Beat of our Images by Maxime Jean-Baptiste and Audrey Jean-Baptiste (France)
Next:Wave Award: You and I by Fanny Chotimah (Indonesia)
Special Mention: Holgut by Liesbeth de Ceulaer (Belgium)
Politiken Danish:Dox Award: Dark Blossom by Frigge Fri (Denmark)
On the Industry side, the Eurimages Co-Production Development Award of 20,000 euros was given to the project Tata/Father directed by Radu Ciorniciuc and Lina Vdovîi, and produced by Manifest Film, Monica Lazurean-Gorgan (Romania/Italy/Germany)
The jury citation for Dox:Award winner The Last Shelter reads how, “through its tender portraiture it populates an epic vista with unforgettable individuals on the cusp of choosing whether they will risk being obliterated in search of a dream. This is a film which changes our own relationship to time and meaning as we watch it. Its scale and implications are epic, at the same time, the film itself is intimate and gentle. This film is an act of resistance against an endless history of colonized cinema in the complexity, patience and integrity of its representation.”
The citation for Eurimages Co-Production Development Award Tata/Father states: “The Eurimages Co-production Development Award of 20,000 Euros goes to a project which takes on a complex personal story with depth, trying to understand the cycle of violence and its mechanisms. Most importantly, it took on the subject with honesty and heart, and shows great potential to benefit from the award.”
All the award-winning festival films are available for Danish audiences at doxonline.dk and will be screened in movie theatres in Copenhagen from May 6-12.
