The Barcelona-based In-Edit music docfest has announced its first confirmed titles. The 21st edition of the festival will run 26 October to 5 November.
Every October, In-Edit brings attracts over 35,000 people in cinemas during the 11-day event in the city of Barcelona. “True to its name, In-Edit seeks the best in national and international music documentaries, embracing the most diverse, unpublished, and inspiring proposals, always based on quality criteria,” write organisers.
First confirmed documentaries (synopses supplied by In-Edit):
- Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story by Andrew Reich, 2022, USA, 84 mins. A colourful and chirpy clusterf*ck of garage punk, glam, power pop, metal, candor, bullheadedness and wild adventures. A genre unto itself, and unto which, members of Sonic Youth, L7, Black Flag, Melvins and Sebadoh profess undying love.
- Dusty & Stones by Jesse Rudoy, 2022, USA, 83 mins. The exciting pilgrimage of two country music worshippers from Swaziland (today’s Kingdom of Eswatini, east of South Africa) to the genre’s ancestral heart, Texas. An unexpected invitation to an international country artist contest gives cousins Dusty and Stones the opportunity to live out their dream. A road trip that they will push to the limit and from which they cannot return without a trophy to offer to their people.
- Elis & Tom, só tinha que ser com você by Roberto de Oliveira & Jom Tob Azulay, 2022, Brazil, 100 mins. In February 1974, stellar singer Elis Regina and bossa nova legend Tom Jobim met in Los Angeles to record an album that would become a true classic of Brazilian popular music. Through previously unreleased 16mm recordings, we witness the creative process behind that miracle: the personality clash and the growing complicity between two outstanding talents.
- La importancia de llamarse Ernesto y la gilipollez de llamarse Eric by César Martínez Herrada, 2022, Spain, 95 mins. The parallel stories of Ernesto Jiménez Linares from Granada and his musical alter ego Eric, drummer of Lagartija Nick and Los Planetas. Falange, Holy Week processions, punk, a teenage wedding, drug binges and the Enrique Morente parade –amid plenty of rogue humor– through the journey of a guy who has beaten the drums for 40 years just as life has beaten him, with almighty force.
- Music For Black Pigeons by Andreas Koefoed, Jørgen Leth, 2022, Denmark, 92 mins. A close, reflective and impressionistic look at living by and for music. Over the course of 14 years, the camera absorbs Danish guitarist and composer Jakob Bro’s encounters with an exceptional line-up of jazz musicians. Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell, Midori Takada, Paul Motian, Jon Christensen, Thomas Morgan and Joe Lovano, among others, keep our curiosity burning. A delight.
- Personality Crisis: One Night Only by Martin Scorsese, David Tedeschi, 2022, USA, 120 mins. The various lives of singer David Johansen, the only survivor of the transvestite rock band that lit the punk fuse in the early 70’s: New York Dolls. An intimate performance with his cabaret and comic alter ego Buster Poindexter serves to reconstruct the career of an iconoclastic and chameleonic performer who knows what it means to turn a city upside down and who never stops living in the moment.
- Revolutionary Quartet, l’enigma Gerhard by Xavier Bosch, 2023, Spain, 94 mins. Catalunya’s Robert Gerhard was one of the most remarkable and mysterious composers of the twentieth century, still relatively unknown due to his exile in England and because part of his work remains to be discovered. This insightful review of his life and work deciphers the depth and idiosyncrasy – between the popular and the avant-garde – of a key figure in dodecaphonism and serialism, and an unsung pioneer of electronic music.
- Riqueni by Paco Bech, 2023, Spain, 120 mins. The shocking battle of flamenco guitar master Rafael Riqueni to get out of his ‘death in life’ of alcoholism and his fragile mental health. Guided by director Paco Bech’s friendly hand, we witness that decade of relapses, internments and human generosity and his unlikely resurrection – crossing paths with Estrella Morente, Rocío Molina and Antonio Canales – until he re-emerges as the most appreciated jondo artist.
- Hung Up on a Dream: The Zombies Documentary by Robert Schwartzman, 2023, USA, 116 mins. Sixty years after their formation, the most refined, baroque, extravagant composers of the Merseybeat era retrace their fleeting, agitated and indelible career. Timeless hits such as She’s Not There and Time of the Season, and one of the most influential albums of all time, Odessey & Oracle, crown a story of friendship that survived the industry’s dodgy dealings.
