The nominations for the 2024 Guldbagge Awards (Sweden’s national film prizes) were announced December 17 during a press conference in Stockholm. Top documentary nominees are The Last Journey directed by Filip Hammar and Fredrik Wikingsson, and G – 21 Scenes from Gottsunda directed by Loran Batti, which received four and three nominations respectively. The nominated documentaries are as follows:
BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM
- The Last Journey directed by Filip Hammar and Fredrik Wikingsson. Populat Swedish TV-duo Filip and Fredrik embark on a trip to France, aiming to rekindle the zest for life of Filip’s father.
- G – 21 Scenes from Gottsunda directed by Loran Batti. Swedish gang conflict as seen from the inside over five years by a filmmaker who is at home portraying one of Sweden’s most dangerous areas.
- Israel Palestine on Swedish TV 1958-1989 directed by Göran Hugo Olsson. A film that explores one of the world’s longest conflicts through archival Swedish TV footage, challenging conventions of history-writing, depicting how media perceived the issue.
- The Road to Nowhere directed by Johan Palmgren Joy and tragedy on a road with no connection at either ends, filmed in the most northern part of Sweden.
The Last Journey, produced by Lars Beckung and Petra Måhl, also received nominations in the Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay categories.
G – 21 Scenes from Gottsunda, produced by Melissa Lindgren, Victor Cunha, Melissa Lindgren & Göran Hugo Olsson, was also nominated in the Best Film, Best Director categories.
Editor Britta Norell also received a nomination for her work on Israel Palestine on Swedish TV 1958-1989.
The Guldbagge Awards ceremony will be held in Stockholm on January 13, 2025. Awarded annually since 1964, the Guldbagge (“Golden Beetle”) is the name of the Swedish Film Institute’s award for achievements in film during the previous year. The award itself, in the form of a fantastical beetle, was designed by the artist Karl Axel Pehrson.
