Thessaloniki Doc Fest announces tributes for 2023
Greek filmmaker Stavros Psillakis and Austrian Nikolaus Geyrhalter will be the subjects of tributes during the upcoming Thessaloniki documentary celebration, March 2-12. The Festival will also bestow honorary Golden Alexander on the directors. “They both share the common vision of exploring the truth, the boundaries and the unseen aspects of our world,” write organisers.

MTV Doc Films acquires world rights to Maite Alberdi’s The Eternal...
The film received excellent reviews after its world premiere at Sundance and has its international premiere in Berlinale Panorama. “I am so happy that The Eternal Memory has found its home at MTV Documentary Films which, in recent years, has believed in the artistic innovation of documentaries and has released documentaries that I greatly admire,” says Alberdi, who was Oscar-nom’d in 2021 for The Mole Agent.
CPH:DOX to launch industry programme with INTRO:DOX, plus other news
INTRO:DOX is a new initiative that supports emerging filmmakers, and will kick off this year’s industry programme in Copenhagen. The festival also announced a record number of eleven international delegations attending CPH:INDUSTRY, and has published a preliminary list of decision makers confirmed for CPH:FORUM 2023 taking place March 20-23.
FIPADOC closes 2023 Industry Days with pitch awards
The fifth FIPADOC Industry Days closed Thursday January 26 with the award of prizes to French and international projects. “Our aim is to ignite collaborations and create long-lasting ties within the European documentary industry,” FIPADOC Creative Director Christine Camdessus told Business Doc Europe during the event.

DOK.fest München’s market for “co-creation and co-production” invites submissions from German-speaking countries for its next edition. Non-fictional formats at any stage of development are welcome. During 3-11 May up to 45 selected project teams will meet around 250 committed partners from production, broadcasting, distribution and sales during pitch events, roundtables and one-to-one meetings.
VdR-Industry reveals first activities for 2023
VdR–Industry will take place during the 54th edition of Visions du Réel from April 23 to 27. This year Benelux will be the focus of the "Switzerland Meets..." programme, running 23/24 April. The Documentary & Audiovisual Forum, a think tank and discussion ground for the national industry, will be held on Sunday 23 April. The 54th edition of Visions du Réel will run April 21-30 in Nyon, Switzerland.

Artist and filmmaker Guido van der Werve, who nearly died in 2016 following a terrifying cycling accident, talks about his searingly honest and highly audacious new film. “It wasn’t easy work,” van der Werve concedes of the process of making it. “I was so badly injured, so at the beginning I was nothing. Then I tried to figure out what happened, as we humans do.”
Oscars 2023 Feature and Short Documentary Nominations
Five feature docs and five short docs have advanced to the final round of Oscar voting. The winners will be announced March 12 during 95th Academy Awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. This year, 144 documentary features and 98 shorts were eligible for consideration.
