Berlinale announced March 4 that the Flemish documentary Nanu Tudor (My Uncle Tudor) has won the Golden Bear for Best Short Film.
In the film, after 20 years of silence, filmmaker Olga Lucovnicova travels back to her great-grandparents house where she endured damaging traumas that left a deep lasting imprint on her memory. Her attempts to overcome the past force a confrontation at the long-awaited family gathering.
The 20-minute doc/drama is produced by LUCA School of Arts.
The jury statement reads: “In Nanu Tudor (My Uncle Tudor), Olga Lucovnicova leads us through the complexity of unravelling a childhood trauma. While intimate details gradually introduce us to a seemingly idyllic world of innocent nostalgia, her conversation with her Uncle Tudor builds up to expose her childhood horror and his unrepentant denial. Lucovnicova’s subtle cinematic gaze circles around her family members with precision. Her personal courage combined with cinematic mastery create a film that is both powerful and emotionally layered.”
The members of the International Short Film Jury were artist Basim Magdy, cinematographer Christine A. Maier, and actor Sebastian Urzendowsky
The Award Ceremony will take place in front of a live audience during the Berlinale Summer Special in June 2021.
