Sixteen projects from 13 countries (17 shooting countries) are selected for FIDLab 2021, running 14-18 June. Ten of the projects are in development, four are in production and two are in post-production.
FIDLab staff selected from a total of 502 submissions from 80 countries, a figure that marks a 60% increase over the past two years. Ten of the projects are in development, four are in production and two are in post-production.
The projects, which includes new works from the likes of Ben Rivers (UK) and Carolina Moscoso (Chile), will compete for a flight of awards, decided upon by three-person jury comprising Leonado BIgazzi (Curator, Fondazione In Between Art Film, Italy), Colombian producer Diana Bustamante and David Schwartz, Netflix Manager of Theatrical Programming.
“Benefiting from their geographical diversity and unique writing qualities, the selection mixes political, environmental, historical, musical, utopian and artistic motives, in a vivacious and playful mode, full of beauty and surprises,” comments FIDLab director Fabienne Moris.
“The approach might be at times humoristic, serious, or offbeat – from historical reconstruction to fantasy tale, from film noir or musical to mystery series, by way of film archives, either familial or touching on the history of cinema, not excepting updated reminiscences of the past. In short, what we have here is a generous programme that reflects the nature of today’s cinema: at once curious, lively, restless and sharp,” Moris adds.
FIDLab will also shine the spotlight on the Belgian doc industry in 2021 via a producer programme co-organised with Flanders Image, Wallonie Bruxelles Images and the Wallonie-Bruxelles Center, Paris.
