The Super 8 Years by Annie Ernaux/David Ernaux-Briot
Running May 18-27 the non-competitive section includes two doc features in 2022; Annie Ernaux’s film The Super 8 Years (Les années super 8, France), made jointly with her son David Ernaux-Briot, and De Humani Corporis Fabrica (Fr-US) by Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor. The 2022 selection is the final one overseen by outgoing artistic director Paolo Moretti.
Produced by David Thion et Philippe Martin of French production company Les Films Pelléas, Annie Ernaux and David Ernaux-Briot’s The Super 8 Years is made in association with ARTE France and La Lucerne.
Annie Ernaux notes of her archive-based film (translated from French): “Reviewing our super eight films taken between 1972 and 1981, it occurred to me that these constituted not only a family archive but also a testimony to the hobbies, lifestyle and aspirations of a social class, in the decade following 1968. These silent images, I wanted to integrate them into a story crossing the intimate, the social and the history, to make sensitive the taste and the colour of these years.”
In De Humani Corporis Fabrica (Fr-US), Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor focus on five hospitals in neighborhoods within norther aris, using the latest medical imaging technology to paint a triple portrait of the human body, the medical profession and the French capital.
