Swiss/German filmmaker Susanne Regina Meures was handed the kinokino Audience Award winner of DOK.fest Munich May 21 for her feature doc Girl Gang, her tale of Leonie who lives the crazy life of a modern day influencer. The film also tells the story of her manager parents and that of Melanie, her greatest fan. The award comes with a cash payment of €2000.
As the Business Doc Europe review said after the film’s world premiere at CPH:DOX:
‘Modern day fairy tales don’t include princes and white horses anymore, unless as a prop perhaps in a carefully composed video. Who needs Prince Charming when you can be a successful influencer and live a life filled with online love? Girl Gang tells the captivating story of a girl’s dream come true, but whether it’s a happy ending is a matter of opinion.’
