European Film Awards 2023 Documentary Film selection

The European Film Academy has revealed the “14 powerful feature-length documentary films”, as chosen by a committee comprising a diverse range of European experts, that have been recommended for potential European Film Awards nomination in the European Documentary category.

The European Film Awards will be presented 9 December in Berlin. “With 16 European countries represented – both EU and non-EU – the selection demonstrates the great diversity in European cinema,” writes the European Film Academy.

The selected documentaries are: 

  • APOLONIA, APOLONIA Written and directed by Lea Glob. Denmark, Poland
  • BETWEEN REVOLUTIONS by Vlad Petri. Written by: Vlad Petri, Lavinia Braniste. Romania, Croatia
  • FOUR DAUGHTERS Written and directed by Kaouther Ben Hania. France, Tunisia, Germany, Saudi Arabia
  • IN THE REARVIEW Written and directed by Maciek Hamela. Poland, France, Ukraine
  • LIGHT FALLS VERTICAL Written and directed by Efthymia Zymvragaki. Spain, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands
  • MOTHERLAND Written and directed by Hanna Badziaka, Alexander Mihalkovich. Sweden, Ukraine, Norway
  • ON THE ADAMANT by Nicolas Philibert. France, Japan
  • ORLANDO, MY POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY Written and directed by Paul B. Preciado. France
  • OUR BODY by Claire Simon. France
  • PARADISE Written and directed by Alexander Abaturov. France, Switzerland
  • SMOKE SAUNA SISTERHOOD Written and directed by Anna Hints. Estonia, France, Iceland

Eligible for the European Film Awards are European documentaries which, among other criteria, had their first official screening between 1 June 2022 and 31 May 2023 and have a European director. Additional titles of documentary films premiering at summer festivals may be added and announced in September.

Over the coming weeks, the 4,600 members of the European Film Academy will begin to watch the selected films and, after the final announcement of all films, vote on the nominations in the category ‘European Documentary.’ Based on the votes of all members, the nominations will be made public on 7 November 2023. The members of the European Film Academy will then vote for the winner which will be announced at the European Film Awards ceremony in Berlin on 9 December 2023.

The selection is based on the Diversity & Inclusion Standards of the European Film Academy.
