Final call for doc submissions for 10th MIA

MIA Doc Co-Production Market

Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo (MIA) has put out a final call for doc projects for its 10th edition, running October 14 to 18. The deadline is July 8 (5 PM CET).

MIA accepts submissions across all genres and formats, at different stages of development (not yet in post-production).  The projects must be suitable for international co-production, and aimed at representing “independent and diverse voices and perspectives.”

Eligible projects for the Doc Co-Production Market & Pitching Forum must be “international projects of outstanding artistic value with release and distribution potentials, write organisers.”

  • TV one-off with a maximum running time of 52’
  • docuseries with a minimum of 4 episodes per 52’ max running time each
  • feature with a maximum running time of 70’

Check out the entry requirements and eligible categories on the MIA website.

Talking to BDE in 2023, Marco Spagnoli, Deputy Director, Head of Doc & Factual Spagnoli, explained how all cards are on the table in terms of doc projects he will consider, both in terms of content and shape. “What we learned in the past years is that the story determines the form. You don’t say, ‘I want to do a movie and I want to find a story.’ You find the story first and then you see how this story could be presented…Could it be a documentary? Could it be a series or a one-off?” he said. “The MIA market can help to facilitate this storytelling.”

Onsite, MIA further lists some of the numerous doc features, TV one-offs, and series that the market has supported on their path to completion:
