Verzió calls for DocLab and Film Critics Workshop applications

Budapest’s Verzió International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, whose 21st edition runs November 6-13, has put out the call for two key initiatives.

The 9th Verzió DocLab (November 5-9) is a 5-day intensive editing workshop for directors and editors. The deadline for submissions is September 9. 

The focus of the Verzió DocLab workshop is story development and editing. With the guidance of international mentors, participants will work on their documentary project’s story, and edit a selected scene that will be presented at the end of the workshop in front of an audience of festival programmers, sales agents and producers. Verzió DocLab is looking for projects by first or second-time feature directors.

“The workshop will aim to guide you to reach the artistic and cinematic potential of your project. With Verzió DocLab you can have your voice heard and reach an impact within the industry as a visual storyteller. Find the core of your story you want to tell!” write organisers.

Verzió DocLab is part of the by DOC AROUND EUROPE network and is looking for projects by directors or producers from/based in the following countries: Croatia, Slovenia, Greece, Serbia, Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland, South Tyrol, Spain, France and Hungary.

The Verzió DocLab Pitch offers awards such as the Verzió Development Award of 1000 Euros and the HBO AWARD of 1500 Euros by Warner Bros. Discovery, amongst many others.

Verzió Documentary Film Critics Workshop Budapest, November 5-9, 2024
The Verzió Documentary Film Critics Workshop is aimed at aspiring and early-career film critics, journalists, writers, filmmakers and artists, or those currently studying to be one of the above? Also to those with a great interest in documentary cinema. The deadline for applications is August 1.

The workshop is organized within the framework of the 21st Verzió International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, 6–13 November 2024, in Budapest and in cities across Hungary. The deadline for applications is August 1.

Tutors are Pamela Cohn, a freelance film & video curator, arts & culture writer, nonfiction story consultant and dramaturge for filmmakers and moving image artists, and Zsolt Gyenge who works as Associate Professor at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (Budapest, Hungary), where he teaches courses in film analysis, avant-garde cinema, film theory, film history, and visual communication theory. 

Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a “writing-intensive” workshop with other documentary film enthusiasts from different backgrounds and cultures; receive valuable feedback from peers and tutors to help polish writing and editing skills in an intimate and supportive setting; and, immerse themselves into the world of a human rights documentary film festival for five days. 

The working language of the workshop will be English. Attendance of all workshop sessions on site during the festival is required for participation. Online participation is currently not possible. 

Selected texts will be published on the Verzió Blog – the only film blog dedicated to documentary in Hungary. The workshop is free of charge.
