The prizes of the seventh Fipadoc (Biarritz) were awarded January 31, after eight hectic days of public and professional activity.
“Fipadoc likes to consider itself a citizen’s festival. In these times of upheaval, we want it to be a place for lively discussions that foster democracy, for otherness that seals the social contract, and for culture that softens the brutality of day-to-day life,” director Christine Camdessus wrote before the festival kicked off on January 24.
Fipadoc Pro presented a programme of more than 50 panels, roundtables and masterclasses for the near-2500 accredited attendees, as well as core pitching sessions of brand-new French and international projects.
“We’re the main event [in France] dedicated to documentary, which is actually both a festival and an industry event,” Head of Industry Bastien Gauclère told BDE before his event. “We are first and foremost a festival with an industry event that is quite the same size, but gathering many, many more directors. Which means the discussions you’re going to have at Fipadoc and during the Industry Days are much more driven by creation, narration, co-production.”

- Grand Prix Musical Documentary. SOUNDTRACK TO A COUP D’ETAT by Johan Gimonprez, Belgium/France/Neths. Endowed with €5,000.
- Grand Prix Impact Documentary. YINTAH by Jennifer Wickham, Brenda Michell and Michael Toledano. Doubly endowed by La Cinémathèque du documentaire and the Fonds Indarra at €5,000 each.
- INA-madelen Audience Award. GOLO ET RITCHIE by Martin Fougerol and Ahmed Hamidi, France. Endowed by the INA-madelen platform with €5,000.
- Sacem Award for Original Score. LE VEILLEUR by Lou du Pontavice and Victoire Bonin Grais, France/Belgium. Endowed by Sacem with €3,000.
- Human Rights in Motion Award. TATA by Lina Vdovîi et Radu Ciorniciuc. Romania/Germany/Neths. Endowed with €5,000 by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
- Young Europeans Award. MURMURING HEARTS by Vytautas Puidokas, Lituania/France/Norway. Doubly endowed with €3,000 by the Erasmus+ France Agency/ Éducation Formation and with €2,000 by Doc Around Europe.
- Short Film Documentary Award. EXIT THROUGH THE CUCKOO’S NEST by Nicola Ilić, Switzerland. Endowed with €3,000 by Enedis.
- New Talent Award. CONFESSION by Rebeka Bizubová, Slovakia. Endowed with €3,000 by Studio Palace.
- Tënk Award POURVU QUE ÇA DURE (MAY IT LAST) by Louise Chauchat, France. Endowed by Tënk, which grants the winning director €500 and a screening of their film on the Tënk platform.
- Coup de cœurs dans les murs Award. OPÉRATION TRUMP, LES ESPIONS RUSSES À LA CONQUÊTE DE L’AMÉRIQUE (RED SHADOW OVER THE WHITE HOUSE) by Antoine Vitkine, France. The prize is awarded by a jury of inmates from the Bayonne house of detention and rewards a film in the French-speaking Panorama.
- Smart Award. HUMAN VIOLINS by Ioana Mischie, Romania/France. Endowed by the Department Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64) with €3,000.
- Michel Mitrani Discovery Award. BLACK BOX by Shiori Itô, Japan. Endowed by France Télévisions with €3,000 and a broadcast on one of its affiliate channels.
- Ciné+ Award. THE FLATS, APPARTS À BELFAST (THE FLATS) by Alessandra Celesia, France/Belgium/Ireland/UK. Endowed by Ciné+ with a €15,000 license fee.
- PFDM Award. SOUDAN, SOUVIENS-TOI (SUDAN, REMEMBER US) by Hind Meddeb. France, Qatar, Tunisie. Endowed by the association “Pour les femmes dans les médias) with €2,000.
