Three films by the late, great European filmmaker Dutch master Johan van der Keuken are presented from September 5 on DAFilms.com, the platform of Doc Alliance, a creative partnership of 7 key European documentary film festivals. The presentation is titled ‘The Road Less Travelled: Films by Johan Van der Keuken.’
The film works have been restored by the EYE Filmmuseum, Netherlands and the presentation includes van der Keuken’s most celebrated work, the four-hour Amsterdam Global Village (1996), as well as Brass Unbound (1993) and The Long Holiday (2000).
“Van der Keuken (1938-2001) was one of the most celebrated Dutch filmmakers and photographers in the country’s cultural history,” writes DAFilms. “For cinephiles the world over, he has been alternately famous for his astonishing political clarity (talking on subjects from colonialism in Africa to the structure of Dutch society to [the business of] money itself) as well as his singular eye as a filmmaker and cameraman. Few artists can claim to have recorded so many rich images from all corners of the world as van der Keuken, whose final film The Long Holiday (2000) pays tribute to a life filled with energetic confrontation, powerful visual and aural discovery.”
“This is the only world we have. I see it as if in a dream,” Johan van der Keuken once commented. “If I can’t make an image, I’m dead.”
