Sheffield Doc/Fest’s Director of Marketplace & Talent Patrick Hurley explains how, as soon as it was obvious there would be no physical market event in 2020, he and his team were able to retain the support of both projects and industry “within hours” of deciding to go virtual.

Sheffield’s Meetmarket is one of the global doc industry’s more established pitching forums, while the Alternate Realities Talent Market seeks to develop storytelling through collaborations between artists, creatives and organisations focusing on the use of digital technologies.

“Firstly we wanted to make sure that we had a buy-in from the industry,” he says. “So we asked if we can keep these dates that they had already blocked off in their diary, that we’ll do it virtually and all we need is an ‘I’m in’. And within a few hours we had that list [see below] of everyone, so we could then tell the project teams that all the people who they would want a meeting with physically were well up to meet virtually.”

For MeetMarket, 48 projects were chosen from over 500 submissions for online presentation to the international industry. “The feedback we get from the commissioning editors and the financiers, funds and foundations, is that within the large slate there is very often something for them. We know very well from years of data what will get interest and what will pick up lots of meetings, so we are able to build a slate that will work for everybody,” says Hurley.


He adds: “We invest a great deal of time to make sure every participant is getting to meet with the people it makes sense for them to meet at times that are mutually convenient. The devil is in the detail with the meticulousness of our scheduling, which both the industry and the decision makers and the project teams praise, and the attention to detail to make sure that this engagement that they are embarking upon with us is going to be as fruitful as possible.”


For the Alternate Realities Talent Market 20 project teams have been selected this year for matchmaking with curators, exhibitors, galleries, museums, international festivals, broadcasters, funding bodies, NGOs and distributors. 


Hurley maintains that the raison d’etre of the Alternate Realities event is as much about ongoing collaboration as for closing on current projects.


“When I called the teams [afterwards] what I sometimes heard was, ‘well that project wasn’t maybe for them, but we found the time to talk about other stuff, so now we are doing this.’ I realised that the emphasis of course should be on current ideas, but we also really wanted to carve out a space where they can talk about their skill sets and other interesting things they are doing, and also make the conversation as 2-way as possible… What are the editorial lines, for example, for the next two years or so, and how their existing and future work can fit into that.”

Co-operation and evolution

Hurley notes the sense of camaraderie among doc festivals and markets during lockdown. “They are all being very generous and forthcoming with advice and tips,” he says. “Sharing has been fantastic. I would definitely concur that within the documentary community everyone is super co-operative and collaborative and non-competitive.”

And of course, the pandemic throws up some ‘existential’ questions in terms of how markets can or should operate in the future. At the very least, coronavirus has forced us all to consider a new modus operandi, one that may remain in part in years to come.

“If the question is to what extent this new arrangement could and ought to be an arrangement going forward given the environmental savings and also wider access to participation, then I think that it’s definitely exciting to have a moment when everybody practises a form of virtual meeting and networking,” he comments. 

But of course, there is the human factor and the process of meaningful face to face exchange to consider, he points out, which is why future events may be presented in hybrid form. “There are reasons why [physical] connections between filmmakers and the industry are desirable given all the cues you can get… that can only be determined from a physical meeting. And another major part of what is currently lost by the need to be virtual are spontaneous peripheral meetings and encounters that happen at a festival or market event that fall outside of a centralised scheduling arrangement.”

All said, Hurley’s sense of relief that the professional event is going ahead is obvious. The process of selecting just shy of 50 projects for Meetmarket, and a further 20 for Alternate Realities, involves serious time, a lot of effort and, ironically, a fair amount of travel.

“This is [the result of] years of relationship-building and going to all these other countries to make connections with creatives,” he stresses. “We are delighted to welcome three projects from India this year, for example, which we had the privilege to meet in Calcutta (Doc Edge), and [we were] travelling inside and outside of Europe, to the US, Asia and South America. 

“All that time and effort culminates in the creation of this slate from 500 submissions that we thoroughly considered… cross-referencing scores and sometimes debating for a long time about the merits of one project over another. 

“The projects that we selected are ready to go now, and it’s really great that they can do this because what these people need is partners and support, so the fact that these conversations can continue while the world is in lockdown is really good. There is a strong sense of relief and celebration about the possibilities that virtual meetings offer, and we are excited that everybody is up for it.”



At MeetMarket 20 of the 48 selected projects (42%) have a first-time filmmaker attached to direct, while 21 (44%) are new works from emerging directors. Twenty of the projects will be pitched by established producers (3+ films completed), many of whom are teaming up with new and emerging directors.


This year’s MeetMarket external assessment committee comprised Salma Abdalla & Andrea Hock (Autlook Film Sales), Vesna Cudic (Met Film Sales,) Tiny Mungwe (STEPS / Durban FilmMart), Roxy Rezvany (Director/Producer), Eric Sloss (Cinetic Media) and Olivier Tournaud (Cinephil). The MeetMarket is produced by Manon Euler and Patrick Hurley.

The creative teams this year range from exciting emerging artists working in digital for the first time, to veteran VR Award winners at Venice Film Festival. There is a wide range of media that the participants are working in, ranging from VR headset experiences, to multi-channel video installations, augmented reality, live motion capture, and immersive dance and theatre performances.


This year’s selection was selected with an external assessment committee comprised of Catherine Baxendale (Invisible Flock), Emma Cooper (VR gamemakers Cooperative Innovations), Alex Davidson (The Barbican) and Julia Scott-Stevenson (i-Docs/UWE). The Alternate Realities Talent Market is coordinated by Harry Løvstrøm.
