Nebulae, Doclisboa’s industry space, will present its third edition 21-31 October 2021, for the first time in hybrid format. Film professionals from all over the world will meet again in Lisbon 21-25 of October, when on-site activities will take place. To ensure participation for all, online activities will run to October 31.
During its first two editions, Nebulae welcomed more than 1000 film professionals, representing more than 70 countries, “ensuring the presence of paramount institutions and film festivals and configuring this space as one of the most outstanding in the international map of cinematographic nonfiction,” organisers underline.
After a 2020 edition in which online activities contributed to the rapid expansion of different territories and to an increase in numbers and diversity of participants, Nebulae will be presented in hybrid form in 2021.
On-site activities will take place 21-25 of October, with live streaming and/or recorded sessions. Until October 31 there will still be a series of activities presented exclusively online. This edition will work with a digital platform, in partnership with WYTH, where it will be possible to access all online events and selected projects from invited country Croatia and the Arché programme (12 projects from Portugal, Spain and Latin America to be announced soon).
In collaboration with the Croatian Audiovisual Centre Nebulae will present a range of Croatian projects in development during a pitching session 22 October. There are nine projects from Croatia to which we have added two projects that will represent the invited countries of the two previous Nebulae editions: Germany and Georgia. As part of the focus on Croatia, the ‘Invited School’ within the Green Years section will be the Academy of Dramatic Arts of the University of Zagreb, one of the country’s most important film schools. Nebulae/Doclisboa will screen a retrospective programme of 16 films from the school’s filmography from the 1970s to the present day. Simultaneously, the Academy supports the Green Years section’s top award, offering the winner an intensive period of mentoring at its premises.
State of the Art will also returns to Nebulae. Organized in partnership with Creative Europe Media Desks, the programme aims at bringing filmmakers, producers and distributors closer to spaces and institutions associated with contemporary art that have also developed consistent work in film programming. “By doing this, we hope to encourage a dialogue between cultural agents, art galleries and museums from different countries, fostering the development of new collaborations,” say organisers.
Once again, Nebulae will host the Filmmaking Seminar, organized in collaboration with UnionDocs Center for Documentary Art, which will be attended by the winners of the 2022 UNDO Fellowship. The Seminar (for selected participants) will take place 23-26 October, in a hybrid format. The aim of this activity is to explore radical cinema practices and the expanding languages of documentary cinema. Each day will feature the screening of films, followed by a work session conducted by one of the scholarship holders. Applications for the Seminar will be open 1 September to 1 October.
