The Oscar-winning short documentary Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl) by Carol Dysinger will close the 22nd Thessaloniki Documentary Festival.
The closing ceremony will take place on Sunday March 15, 2020. The director will be in Thessaloniki to present her touching story of emancipation and skateboard action.
The documentary follows courageous teachers in Kabul, who as part of NGO Skateistan’s educational programs, help a group of teenage girls from disadvantaged neighborhoods to learn how to read, write and… skateboard, using the most powerful weapons: self-confidence and self-respect.
“I really just set out to make a love letter to my favourite place,” director commented to Business Doc Europe of her film in January 2020. “I go there for the country not the war, although I have certainly seen a lot of the latter. And I love the girls of Afghanistan, and I have been trying to figure out a way to make a movie that would really show you their spirit.”
“When they called me about Skateistan I was there in a heartbeat,” she added, “because I knew that it could really let you see these mischievous, cunning, hilarious, cute, innocent little girls who must not go under the Taliban rule – they just cannot.”
