A total of 26 documentary feature projects, and four series projects, are selected for the upcoming RE>CONNEXT which will again take place online in 2021.
RE>CONNEXT is the virtual showcase for films and TV series coming from Flanders and Brussels, Belgium. From 4-15 October, a select group of top industry professionals will be granted 24/7 on-demand access to new project pitches, presentations of works in progress, and screenings of recent, new and upcoming titles.
FILMS AT RE>CONNEXT
The selection features 9 new doc projects, including Last Letters From My Grandma by Olga Lucovnicova, winner of this year’s Berlin Golden Bear for her short My Uncle Tudor, and Rachida El Garani (In My Father’s House), both newcomers. Projects will also be pitched by established documentary-makers including Manu Riche (Carbon), Steven Dhoedt (Sunrise Kids), Brecht Debackere (Nostalgia For The Future) and Pieter Van Eecke (Planet B).
The four non-fiction work-in-progress presentations comprise Soundtrack To A Coup d’Etat, the new documentary by Johan Grimonprez, as well as And Tomorrow The World by Louisiana Mees and Beast by Jillis Schriel and Joost Laperre. Sahim Omar Khalifa will have a busy RE>CONNEXT, presenting the documentary Iraq’s Invisible Beauty as well as the fictional work-in-progress Baghdad Messi, based on his award-winning short of the same name.
Thirteen new and complete documentaries will screen at the 2021 edition of RE>CONNEXT, including Why We Fight by Mirjam Devriendt and Alain Platel (pictured above), Liesbeth De Ceulaer’s Holgut, Volkan Üce’s All-In and six titles made as part of the Borderline documentary collection, which focusses on unknown but fascinating borders within Europe.
SERIES AT RE>CONNEXT
Of the four non-fiction series titles selected for this year’s edition, one is a new doc pitch: Mobutu, Guillaume Graux’s biopic series on the Congolese dictator, as seen through the prism of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Two non-fiction series projects will be presented as works-in-progress, including Voices Of Liberation, Koen Mortier’s first foray into documentary.
In addition, one completed non-fiction series will screen for industry professionals. This is The Sound Of Seoul by Steven Dhoedt, who will also present his new project Sunrise Kids, produced by Visualantics.
RE>CONNEXT is organized by Flanders Image, a division of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF).
