In a statement released November 4, organisers of the European Film Awards announced that, as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic, the 33rd European Film Awards will take place as a series of virtual events produced out of Berlin. Every evening will see a livestream of “The EFAs at Eight”, celebrating the nominees and winners of the various categories of the 2020 European Film Awards.
The EFAs at Eight events will kick off on Tuesday, 8 December, at 20:00 with a high-profile group discussion about the future of European filmmaking after Covid-19, and will close with the grand finale on Saturday, 12 December, at 20.00.
EFA Chairman Mike Downey: “The times we live in call for innovation and extra creativity. In this unusual year, this will be an unusual, and, we hope an exceptional, awards ceremony – one with a different approach, that will allow us to give more attention to the various awards presented. Necessity being the mother of invention, we have chosen to try out this different format, and will use it to see how we will further develop the EFAs in the years to come.”
The entire programme will be streamed live at www.europeanfilmawards.eu and through an international network of streaming and broadcasting partners, with the nominees & winners joining via live video conference.
As reported October 13 in Business Doc Europe, it is hoped that that the awards will be staged live in Berlin in 2021 and in Reykjavik in December 2022.
