Visions du Réel announced September 16 the appointment of Sabine Fayoux Cantillo as its new Head of Industry. Over the past 12 years working in the New York doc sector, Fayoux Cantillo has held various roles across film production, programming, festivals, and artist support. These include her tenure as Associate Director of Program at Chicken & Egg Films.
Beginning October 1st, Fayoux Cantillo’s new appointment in Nyon “will further extend and drive forward the internationally recognised VdR–Industry platform,” the festival writes. She will continue the outstanding work carried out by her predecessor, Alice Burgin, who has taken over as Documentary Investment Manager at Screen Australia.
Comments Fayoux Cantillo: “I am beyond thrilled to join Visions du Réel as their Head of Industry. VdR has been programming some of the boldest, most creative, exciting and artistic documentaries in the field, and I look forward to playing a role in further shaping such a profound legacy. Being entrusted with creating spaces for filmmakers to share their uncompromised vision is a huge gift and responsibility, one that calls for fostering deep listening and engaging conversations, as well as prioritizing genuine relationship building opportunities with industry representatives, qualities that have made VdR–Industry’s platform so unique and special.”
In her previous position as Associate Director of Program at Chicken & Egg Films in New York, Fayoux Cantillo dedicated herself to strongly supporting the work of women and gender-expansive documentary filmmakers across the globe. She has led the design and implementation of several ground-breaking filmmaker programs including the (Egg)celerator Lab for first- and second-time filmmakers, and Project: Hatched for films running impact campaigns, among others.
She was also an integral part of advancing the organization’s filmmaker-centered approach to mentorship and programming, as well as their decision to extend their criteria to support all gender expansive filmmakers. Fayoux Cantillo has served as a jury member for several festivals and awards including DMZ, One World Media Awards, and the Uruguayan Film Fund, as well as a panelist at CNEX, FIFDH, and AIDC. She was also chosen to participate in Film at Lincoln Center’s 4th Annual Industry Academy and in Creative Capital’s Taller, a career development program for Spanish-speaking Latinx artists in New York City.
Sabine Fayoux Cantillo who is Colombian and French, holds a BA in Sociology from the Université Paris-Diderot, as well as a MA in Visual Anthropology from the University of Barcelona. She was partially raised in Switzerland across the lake from Nyon, the home base of Visions du Réel.
