Visions du Réel (15-25 April 2021) will host Tatiana Huezo Sánchez, a filmmaker with whom the festival has had ties for many years, and Pietro Marcello, an adventurous director with a “singular” body of work, as part of the Festival’s 2021 Ateliers. “The works of the two filmmakers, in their respective uniqueness, enable us to further demonstrate the artistic importance and diversity of the contemporary non-fiction filmmaking landscape,” sat the festival.
Their vast “cinematographic horizons” will also be the subject of two public Masterclasses, true to the tradition of the Ateliers. Pietro Marcello is invited in partnership with the HEAD (Geneva University of Art and Design).
The festival stresses how, through a body of work as committed as it is personal, Tatiana Huezo Sánchez paints the portrait of her country and relentlessly denounces the mechanisms of terror, employing a poetic and sensitive cinematographic language, which succeeds, with great decency, in giving substance to absence, violence and suffering.
The festival continues: “As for Pietro Marcello, his work, falling within a formally audacious and sensual contemporary Italian cinematographic, often non-fiction scene (with the likes of Alice Rohrwacher, Michelangelo Frammartino, Roberto Minervini, etc.) is imbued with his profound interest in literature and art history, constantly reinventing cinematographic codes with humanism, romanticism and great artistic freedom.”
As previously reported Visions du Réel will also pay tribute to French author, filmmaker and screenwriter Emmanuel Carrère during its 52nd edition in April 2021 by awarding him the prestigious Honorary Award (previously named the Prix Maître du Réel).
The Carrère homage will include a masterclass, a ‘carte blanche’ of films that influenced Carrère’s own work and a presentation of his documentary Retour à Kotelnitch (2003), and will be presented during the 52nd edition of the Festival taking place from 15 to 25 April 2021. The Cinémathèque suisse (National Film Archive) and the ECAL (University of Art and Design Lausanne) are partners with Visions du Réel in offering this invitation.
In January Visions du Réel announced its Industry dates for 2021. The most important activities and project presentations will be held online April 14 to April 17 in a format for professionals that will be “community-centred and user-friendly.” It is hoped and expected that face-to-face meetings will resume when the event is further opened up to professionals April 18-22.
