WALLS – Akinni Inuk selected as Greenland’s Oscar candidate

WALLS – Akinni Inuk by Sofie Rørdam and Nina Paninnguaq Skydsbjerg

The documentary film WALLS – Akinni Inuk has been selected as Greenland’s Oscar 2026 candidate in the Best International Feature category. The 98th Oscars ceremony will take place March 15, 2026.

Directed by Sofie Rørdam and Nina Paninnguaq Skydsbjerg, the film tells the story of two Greenlandic women whose lives become intertwined behind the walls of Greenland’s new correctional facility. Ruth grew up in a small settlement on Greenland’s magnificent east coast, however has spent almost half her life behind bars. She is serving an indeterminate preventive detention sentence and does not know whether she will ever be released. Nina, an ambitious film producer from Nuuk, becomes deeply involved in Ruth’s fate while working on a documentary project about Greenland’s prison system. At first glance, the two women seem very different, but they soon discover that they share a dark past that connects them in unexpected ways. When Ruth’s case is suddenly reopened, both women are given an unforeseen chance at redemption—and to help each other regain their freedom.

WALLS – Akinni Inuk is produced by Emile Hertling Péronard (Ánorâk Film), with support from NORDDOK, the Danish Film Institute, and Eqqumiitsuliornermut Aningaasaateqarfik (the Greenland Arts Fund).

AldaRós Olsen Rosing, chair of Greenland’s Oscar Committee, comments: “In Greenland’s Oscar Committee we assessed several films. WALLS – Akinni Inuk stands out as a fine and intimate documentary. The film is both deep and thought provoking and challenges our understanding of freedom. The subject is serious, but it also offers hope for a better future.”

This is only the third time Greenland’s Oscar Committee has chosen an Oscar candidate, the other two being Nuummioq (2010) and Inuk (2012).
