After the main awards were handed out June 14, the final festival film award was presented June 15 to Ultimate Thunder which received the 2026 Audience Award, voted for by festival-goers from all feature films across the programme.Ultimate Thunder follows a punk band whose members have learning disabilities and Down syndrome as they fight to reach a bigger stage as funding cuts, health scares and setbacks close in.
Sheffield DocFest Creative Director Raul Niño Zambrano commented: “We are thrilled to announce Ultimate Thunder as the winner of the Sheffield DocFest 2026 Audience Award. The film’s premiere at the Lyceum Theatre was an emotional whirlwind of laughter and tears, ending in a thunderous applause and a standing ovation as the band took to the stage for an unforgettable live performance. Ultimate Thunder beautifully captures the enduring power of community, and we are incredibly proud to see our audience crown it this year’s favourite.”
Ben G Brown, director of Ultimate Thunder Director, added: ”It means so much to all of us, myself and the band are beyond chuffed. We’ve always admired the past winners of this award, and the festival itself, so to be in this position feels a bit surreal. Premiering and screening the film at the festival already felt like an unexpected achievement, so winning a people-voted award is incredibly meaningful and a lovely surprise. This is exactly why we made the film: for audiences to see it, for everyday people to fall in love with the band as we filmmakers have, and for people with learning disabilities, autism and Down syndrome to take centre stage in an authentic way. Thanks to everyone who came to see the film and voted for it. It really means a lot.”
In addition to the annual festival, Sheffield DocFest presents year-round workshops, screenings and labs offering mentoring opportunities both in the UK and internationally. “In partnership with Showroom Cinema, Sheffield DocFest will continue its engagement with the documentary community in Sheffield with the monthly DocNights screening Programme, which is dedicated to championing the work of documentary filmmakers and bringing documentary cinema to audiences all year round. Other year-round programmes to come in 2026/2027 include the continuation of monthly documentary screening programmes in London,” organisers say.
