AJD Rough Cut: Jodari Meno by Jamal Al Khanji

Jodari Meno by Jamal Al Khanji

“Jodari Meno presents a compelling investment opportunity by combining a universally relatable narrative of perseverance and self-discovery with visually stunning and emotionally resonant storytelling,” producer Cindy le Templier (Film House, Doha) told BDE ahead of her September 15 presentation of debutant Jamal Al Khanji’s story of a passionate spearfisher on a relentless quest.

In the 70/52-minute doc, what begins as a pursuit of a world record to capture the largest ever dogtooth tuna inevitably becomes a profound journey of self-discovery, exploring the deeper questions of life, purpose, and the human spirit.

“This documentary speaks directly to that demand, offering a powerful narrative that transcends cultural barriers,” Le Templier adds. “The film’s themes of resilience, personal growth, and the human connection to nature are universal and have a proven track record of resonating with international viewers, as seen in recent successes like My Octopus Teacher and Jago, and echoing the themes of Hemingway’s ‘The Old Man and the Sea.’”

It’s not every debutant director who can claim to have been a successful cardiothoracic surgeon, lawyer and entrepreneur. “Jamal has approached this project with a hands-on, entrepreneurial mindset, identifying the right collaborators early on in the process,” producer Le Templier comments of her multi-hyphenate filmmaker. “One such key collaborator is David Ochoa, an internationally recognized specialist in free-diving cinematography, who has been capturing Dr Jamal’s spearfishing adventures and the pursuit of the world record.”

“We at The Film House are always on the lookout for inspiring new projects and after meeting Dr Jamal and seeing the footage he had captured, we were honoured to come on board and help him take the film to the finish line,” she adds.

Cinematography will play a crucial role in bringing Al Khanji’s vision to life, Le Templier further stresses. Using advanced underwater filming techniques, the film will immerse viewers in a visually dynamic narrative. Natural lighting, vibrant marine colours, and the contrasting environments of Qatar, Zanzibar, and Italy “weave together to create a world that is at once beautiful, dangerous, and deeply symbolic.”

What’s more, the environments themselves reflect the emotional arc of the film, “offering not just breath-taking scenery but also a profound sense of place and purpose that transcends geographical boundaries,” she elaborates. “The cinematic vision of Jodari Meno is designed to immerse the audience in both the physical and emotional depths of the ocean, mirroring Dr Jamal’s personal journey.”

The producer is just €80,000 shy of reaching her €225,000 budget. More scenes are scheduled to be filmed in Qatar, focusing on Dr Jamal’s interactions with his family and his preparation for the next world record attempt. The team plans to shoot in Zanzibar at the end of October.

“Dr Jamal’s last trip was particularly challenging, and the upcoming trip carries both great hopes and significant concerns,” says Le Templier. “He is currently training and preparing, discussing his state of mind with close family and friends ahead of what he hopes will be his final attempt.”

“While we are eager to share Jodari Meno with industry experts at AJD Industry Days, we approach it with an open mind, excited to hear feedback and insights on its distribution potential,” the producer underlines. “We hope the project resonates with potential partners and collaborators, and we’re open to exploring co-production, partnerships, and distribution opportunities. At this stage, our focus is on presenting Dr Jamal’s inspiring journey and engaging in meaningful conversations as we move toward completion.”
