The 14 films ‘will take the viewers on a journey to an alternative reality without any traces of the pandemic, but full of equally serious problems,’ says the festival. Two of the films are Polish productions. All the films will compete for the Golden and Silver Horns. Festival to run May 30 to June 6.

In Bellum – The Daemon of War, Swedish directors David Herdies and Georg Götmark invite three disparate characters to meditate on their perceptions of war, a US veteran of Afghanistan, a Swedish developer of AI for use in battle, and a US photographer whose latest work chronicles the Afghanistan conflict.

“IDFA is changing along with documentary film, moving into a new program structure that departs from its solid and proven past into a more flexible curatorial vision that is open to experimentation,” says festival chief Orwa Nyrabia.

A simple question – what is a concerto? – sets in motion a a conversation between virtuoso pianist/composer Kris Bowers and his astonishing grandad Horace, encompassing over ninety years of lived experience and all distilled into a 13-minute film. Co-director Ben Proudfoot tunes in with BDE.

Jerry Garcia Music Arts and Malcolm Leo Productions to co-produce new feature-length doc with never-before-seen footage of the private thoughts and reflections of the former Grateful Dead frontman.

Titled 'Films Belong to Those who Need them - Fragments from the History of Black British Cinema', the Sheffield retrospective “will spotlight and celebrate the history of Black British screen culture - a wide and diverse filmography that has been largely overlooked and undervalued in film discourse.” Fest runs 4-13 June.

“After enduring the extraordinary difficulties of this past year, the upcoming conference seeks to embrace the opportunities that lie within and inspire the community to re-imagine documentary’s role in our quickly evolving world, based on principles of social justice and equity,” say event organisers.

All female management board as foundation president and founder Krzysztof Gierat steps down. Former VP Barbara Orlicz-Szczypuła to take charge. Katarzyna Wilk and Patrycja Czarny appointed to the management board as new VPs. Gierat will continue as Director of Krakow Film Festival and will sit on the foundation’s programme council.
