Canada’s NFB launches TopDocs, a global FAST channel for doc

National Film Board of Canada (NFB)

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is entering the free, ad-supported streaming television (FAST) space for the first time with the launch of TopDocs, which will feature 150 hours of programming drawn from the NFB’s extensive library of 6,000 titles, with approximately 20 hours of fresh content to be added each month.

For the uninitiated, FAST channel streaming services deliver scheduled, linear programming over the web at no extra cost to viewers.

TopDocs will debut this autumn on the North American app Zone-ify, followed by its roll-out on other smart TV and streaming devices. The English-language version will kick off first, with a French-language version set to follow over the coming months.

Led by Nathalie Bourdon, Director of Distribution and Market Development, the NFB distribution team is presenting TopDocs at MIPCOM (13-16 October), with the aim to secure international distribution deals and expand the channel beyond North America.

“TopDocs is a bold step forward in how we connect global audiences with powerful documentary storytelling,” said Bourdon. “FAST channels are transforming the media landscape, and this launch allows us to bring the richness of the NFB collection to viewers in a fresh, accessible way—wherever they are, whenever they tune in.”

“For now, we’re programming TopDocs exclusively with NFB content. We’ll revisit the possibility of external acquisitions in about a year, once the channel is fully established and running smoothly,” Bourdon added to BDE.

The new FAST channel will deliver “gripping and timely content,” the company further underlined in its press notice. “From climate change to human rights, NFB documentaries explore real stories that inform, inspire and spark conversation.” NFB is also exploring the development of additional FAST channels across other genres, such as animation or short documentaries, Bourdon confirmed.

Suzanne Guèvremont, Government Film Commissioner and Chairperson of the NFB, commented: “We live in a world where truth itself has become harder to recognize, stories harder to trust—and where the role of inspiring, meaningful storytelling has never mattered more. With TopDocs, the NFB is expanding access to stories that matter, amplifying unique and authentic voices, and creating a new global space for conversations that help shape our world.”
