The Grierson Trust announced Oct 8 that Anna Godas, CEO and co-founder of Dogwoof, will be the recipient of the prestigious Grierson Trustees Award for 2026, sponsored by the BBC, and given in recognition of her role in distributing and producing multiple award-winning feature documentaries for more than 20 years. The award will be presented at this year’s British Documentary Awards ceremony in association with Banijay UK, taking place November 10 November at London’s Roundhouse.
Over the past 22 years the company has backed 37 Academy Award-nominated documentaries, including seven winners, alongside five BAFTA-winning and 20 Grierson Award-winning films. Titles funded or distributed by Dogwoof include 20 Days in Mariupol, Navalny, No Other Land, Free Solo, Apollo 11, Fire of Love, All That Breathes, The Act of Killing and Blackfish.
“During that time, Anna has helped transform Dogwoof from a small UK independent film distributor to a leading global brand in the field of documentary,” the Trust writes. She spearheaded the launch of Dogwoof’s international sales division, and its move into financing and production, “creating a business that can support documentaries from development through to international sales and distribution.”
The Grierson Trustees’ Award, sponsored by the BBC, recognises the role Godas has played as the driving force in developing new routes to finance and market for independent documentary, “connecting filmmakers with international buyers, distributors and production partners.”
“By expanding Dogwoof beyond traditional UK distribution, [Godas] has helped create opportunities for ambitious documentaries to secure backing and reach global audiences, while strengthening the UK’s position within the international documentary sector,” the Trust adds.
Tom McDonald, Chair of the Grierson Trust comments: “The Grierson Trust prides itself on celebrating documentary makers – but just as importantly – those who work to champion documentary craftspeople and ensure their films are seen by audiences all around the world. Anna has tirelessly devoted herself to making sure the best of global documentary is recognised, talked about and seen. She has made an indelible mark on our industry, entrepreneurially evolving Dogwood to meet changes in the market whilst always staying true to her passion for great filmmaking.”
Anna Godas comments: “What an honour this is. I’ve spent my career so far making sure great true stories get seen. That feels more important today than ever, as the range of stories being backed becomes narrower and narrower. I’m incredibly proud that at Dogwoof we keep finding ways to bring ambitious projects to audiences around the world. And while my name is on this award, I see it as recognition of everyone at Dogwoof. I couldn’t be prouder of the company we have built together, the brilliant people behind it, and the extraordinary films we have helped bring into the world.”
