Sales and distribution outfit Lightdox has acquired the international sales rights to Nostalgia for the Future, the new documentary by Belgian filmmaker and visual artist Brecht Debackere, narrated by acclaimed actress Charlotte Rampling. The film, playing this week at Film Fest Ghent, takes audiences deep into the mysterious world and extraordinary archive of legendary filmmaker Chris Marker, offering an intimate and visually inventive portrait of one of cinema’s most elusive figures.
Described as “a cinematic exploration of memory, images and the elusive figure of Chris Marker,” Nostalgia for the Future celebrated its world premiere in Cannes Classics in May 2026. The 75-minute film is a Belgium/Netherlands/Italy co-production between Visualantics, SeriousFilm, Cobra Films and Ghirigori.
Chris Marker, filmmaker, photographer, writer and multimedia artist behind such landmark works as La Jetée and Sans Soleil, spent much of his life deliberately avoiding the public eye. Famously elusive, he rarely gave interviews and would sometimes send photographs of his cats instead of portraits of himself. He once described himself as the “best-known author of unknown films.”
In Nostalgia for the Future, Debackere enters the labyrinth of Marker’s legacy through his personal archive, held by the Cinémathèque française. Guided by Rampling’s distinctive voice, an unnamed archivist moves through photographs, documents, film fragments and personal traces, attempting to reconstruct the man who chose to disappear behind his own images.
“Rather than offering a conventional biography, the film approaches Marker through the associative logic of his work. The archive becomes a living system of memory, while Marker’s images become ‘time machines, fragments through which the past, present and possible futures begin to overlap,” read the film notes. “Drawing on access to Marker’s 550-box estate at the Cinémathèque française, Debackere avoids a conventional biography, instead building an elusive portrait from fragments, images and traces left behind by one of cinema’s most enigmatic figures.”

Anna Berthollet, CEO of Lightdox comments: “Chris Marker left behind an archive as enigmatic as the man himself. Brecht Debackere has found a remarkably cinematic way into this world, creating not simply a portrait of Marker, but a meditation on images, memory and the way we imagine the future. A film that speaks directly to what Lightdox looks for: bold, author-driven documentaries with a distinctive cinematic language and the power to open new ways of seeing.”
