Filmed over eight years, Finnish actress Pihla Viitala’s debut documentary follows Carmen, a young Romani girl from northern Finland, as she grows from a free and wild child into a young woman shaped by the weight of her world.
The film reveals how life itself transforms a person – sometimes gently, sometimes with brutal force, the synopsis reads. Carmen’s journey reflects the invisible threads of prejudice, chance encounters, and the opportunities, or limitations, assigned at birth. At its heart, the film is a portrait of girlhood and sisterhood: the fragile bonds, fierce loyalties, and quiet resilience that accompany the passage into womanhood.”
“The film is locally necessary and vital [within Finland] because of the rarely-seen access to Finnish-Romani women’s life that the director Pihla Viitala has gained,” producer Elise Pietarila of Finnish production company Gimmeyawallet tells BDE. “Finnish-Romanis are one of the most discriminated minority groups in Scandinavia, and very rarely portrayed.”
“What makes the film very global and universal is the precision [in depicting] what it is like for a girl to become a woman,” Pietarila continues. “The documentary is shot during 8 years of Carmen’s life, and the camera meticulously shows a Pippi Långstocking-like girl, year by year turning into a hard-boiled woman. The beauty of the film is that, despite the challenges of Carmen’s life, the film isn’t a sob story – quite the opposite.”
Carmen! is a Finnish – French co-production [Drole de Trame is the French partner] with two Scandinavian broadcasters (YLE and SVT) already on board. “We are very happy and grateful that we have managed to have financiers (FFI, YLE, AVEK, Church Media Foundation) to back this project in full scale,” says Pietarila.
The producer further opines how, as an award-winning actress, director Viitala understands better than most what it is like to be followed by a camera, which informs her approach to direction. “Her view on Carmen is very personal and full with warmth,” says Pietarila.
Pietarila reserves particular praise for DOP Päivi Kettunen (The Other Side of Mars, 2019; Ladies of Steel, 2020). “She has done amazing work with the cinematic storytelling, and the look of the film is calm and elegant. Pihla’s and Päivi’s touch is seen in scenes that cannot be found from any other film produced,” the producer points out.
She further commends the work of the sound department, specifically Svante Colerus (winner of Best Finnish Sound Designer 2024) and composer Lauri Porra (Best Finnish Film Composer 2024, and descendant of the great Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius). “They are a match made in heaven to bring their very own finesse to the film,” she says.Carmen!’s release is slated for Autumn 2026 “Our dream is to open at prestige film festival for documentaries,” hopes Pietarila, adding that at FFA, “we are searching for a sales agent that sees the power of this young girl, and the film’s potential, the same way we do.”
