The Recovery follows former pro skier Pekka Hyysalo as he battles to reclaim his life and identity after a devastating accident, transforming adversity into inspiration through resilience, friendship, and a quest for healing and purpose.
“The mutual vision of Pekka’s real and untold inspirational story will resonate locally and we felt it needed to reach a wider global audience to really support the vision we had for the project, to make the societal impact that really could potentially create ripples beyond the screen,” comments Van Padhaal, producer and CEO of Pablo Films, the production company founded in 2008 by directors Jukka Metsäaho and Jyri Paajama. “Once we signed off with Pekka on developing the film, SES and a local well-known investor stepped in to support the project.”
“What we have learned along the way is so much more than what influenced us in the beginning when we took this project on,” Padhaal adds. “Pekka is a massive influencer in Finland as a spokesperson for positivity and SISU (grit) which is the cornerstone of Finnish mentality and DNA. So locally there is a huge sense of pride within Pekka’s story.”
When the team tested contacts across the international industry, they piqued the interest of Whisper (UK), a company with a “deep history” in sport broadcasting and documentaries, who subsequently came on board.
In the film, Pekka’s is far more than a comeback story; it’s about redefining identity and purpose. Through “intimate footage and expert insights,” the film explores the brain’s incredible ability to heal, and the concept of post-traumatic growth. “Pekka’s journey proves how pain can be a catalyst for growth and a deeper sense of strength and meaning, and how the mind can adapt and evolve.”
“This story has all the attributes to positively affect people from all walks of life to go the extra mile and face hardships that life throws at us all,” Van Padhaal adds of the documentary’s international potential. “From everyday people to healthcare workers, doctors, nurses, first responders and specialists alike, who have in part shared that this story has an impact on how these extreme cases could be handled, treated and approached.”
Director Jyri Paajamaa describes his working relationship with fellow director Jukka Metsäaho, with whom he made seven previous films. “We have been working together as a directing duo for documentaries for over a decade now. Our strengths come from our experience working with world class athletes, so we are able to understand the mindset Pekka has, and had as an athlete before the accident,” he says.
“We couldn’t tell Pekka’s story without understanding what he has lost. Who he was. Who he became,” Paajamaa adds. “Our core values come from our humane, detailed and respectful approach to our real subjects. We are deep thinkers and approach human behaviour with a detailed touch.”
“This gives us a firm ground when observing sensitive subjects in their true glory… We dig deep and put a lot of effort to understand [them].”
The team’s festival strategy is to target key regional festivals first, and then international A-Festivals to leverage the film’s eventual global release.
“Our impact campaign strategy will utilise Pekka’s existing reach and channels alongside our newfound impact partners we met during our film’s journey within healthcare sectors, here in Finland and the UK,” informs producer Padhaal. “The film has all the elements of making a real difference. which has always been a core goal.” Furthermore, Padhaal aims to work with NGO’s and government on mental health, and to educate on building “the right mindset for those facing trauma in everyday life.”
