The 2024 Bafta Film Awards nominations, which celebrate the best in big screen activity over the past 12 months, were announced January 18.
Leading the way in documentary is Mstyslav Chernov’s 20 Days In Mariupol which is nominated in two categories; Best Documentary and Best Film Not in the English Language.
The winners will be announced February 18 during a ceremony hosted by actor David Tennant at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The nominees are:
Best Documentary
- 20 Days In Mariupol by Mstyslav Chernov: After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a team of journalists trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol struggle to continue their work documenting the war’s atrocities.
- American Symphony by Mathew Heineman: Musician Jon Batiste attempts to compose a symphony as his wife, writer Suleika Jaouad, undergoes cancer treatment.
- Beyond Utopia by Beyond Utopia by Madeleine Gavin: The story of several families attempting to escape oppression in North Korea.
- Still: A Michael J Fox Movie by Davis Guggenheim: The personal and professional stories of Michael J. Fox, and what happens when an incurable optimist confronts an incurable disease.
- Wham! by Chris Smith: The story of the eponymous pop phenomenon.
Best Film not in the English language
- 20 Days In Mariupol by Mstyslav Chernov
Elsewhere, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer leads the pack in terms of fiction with 13 nominations, followed by Poor Things (11), Killers of the Flower Moon (9) and The Zone of Interest (9).
