dok.incubator online preview November 28

Racing Hearts by Milla Bergh

Eight new feature-length documentaries coming out of the dok.incubator 2023 programme will be pitched online November 28 to an invited audience.

“From women’s rights, war trauma, and mental illness to measuring happiness – the variety of topics to be presented at this year’s preview create an impressive mosaic of today’s world. The carefully selected film collection demonstrates the richness of filmmaking approaches and cultural backgrounds, furthermore seven out of these eight films are directed (or co-directed) by women and represent the strong female voice in current filmmaking,” write organisers.

“It is very important to bring the female topics and perspective into the public space. These films represent themes often missing in the public debate, show unique insights into stories and enlighten many important messages of the world we live in,” says Andrea Prenghyová, the dok.incubator CEO.

Among the eight documentaries, there is a story of four activists fighting the abortion ban in Poland (Abortion Dream Team), similarly as empowering as the journey of a team of ageing Ukrainian cheerleaders navigating the trauma of war in different ways (Nice Ladies). Audiences will discover the captivating story of two female race-car drivers who became world famous in the ’60s (Racing Hearts), as well as the unique country of Bhutan, where measured happiness has a higher value than GDP (Agent of Happiness). The films emphasize saving one’s family and breaking a generational cycle of trauma and abuse (Fakir), fighting for your dreams in a country that forbids you to chase them (If Freedom Were a Song), or finding your own way in life. No matter if it is through the world that has so far been built only around your mental condition (Just Hear Me Out) or by giving a voice to those who lost almost all their freedom (Mina and the Radio Bandits).
