Prague-based documentary sales agent Filmotor has acquired worldwide rights (except France) for Boubacar Sangare’s feature doc debut A Golden Life (trailer). Revolving around 16-year-old Rasmané, young men in Burkina Faso look beneath the earth both for gold and a better future.
A Golden Life (BDE review) was produced by Imedia (Burkina Faso), Merveilles Productions (Benin) and Les Films de la Caravane (France). It was co-produced by TV 5 Monde.
After its successful debut in Berlinale, the film was presented in FESPACO in Burkina Faso and is selected for the upcoming Movies that Matter film festival (Amsterdam) where it will be screened in Festival Favourites section.
Director Sangare is currently developing several other projects including the road movie documentary Djéliya, Memory of Manding (selected for La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde, Cannes Film Festival 2022 and Miradas Doc 2023 and which will be presented at Hot Docs Forum) and two fiction films.
Co-producer Madeline Robert (Les Films de la Caravane) comments: “We are delighted with this new collaboration around the film. A Golden Life is a film that has the power to take us to a place we will never go, to meet people whose daily life is so far from ours. And at the same time it is a film that deals with issues that concern the world we all live in: work, youth, exploitation of raw materials or environment. The launch of the film in festivals was successful, in Berlinale in the Forum section and then in Ouagadougou for the FESPACO, which confirms to us that the film has an international potential. With Filmotor, we believe that the film will be well supported for its future, both in festivals and in sales, so that it can find its audience all over the world.”
Michaela Cajkova, head of Filmotor adds: “It is a great pleasure to welcome a new African film in our small, carefully curated line up! Films like Khartoum Offside or As I Want (both of which started life at Berlin) were some of our most successful releases. A Golden Life is great cinema [and] Boubacar is a great talent, and I am excited about the new collaboration with him. I hope we can help this film to be widely seen and released.”
