CPH:DOX HUMAN:RIGHTS Award: Black Water by Natxo Leuza
“From the beginning I wanted to address one of the problems that concerns me most at the moment, something that affects us all,” comments Natxo Leuza, director of the feature doc Black Water, about the flooding of much of Bangladesh as a result of climate change. “However, it was always clear to me that the story should focus on the characters. I wanted them to carry the weight of the film, representing the millions of people who will have to leave their homes.”
CPH:DOX/Movies That Matter/VdR: Flophouse America by Monica Strømdahl
“I just tried mentally and physically to make myself small and invisible,” Norwegian director and photographer Monica Strømdahl tells BDE how she blended into the background when making her debut feature documentary, Flophouse America (in International Competition in CPH:DOX and also screening in Movies That Matter and Visions Du Reel). The film is set almost entirely within the tiny, cramped hotel room Mikal shares with his alcoholic parents and where he has lived almost all his life.
