FYC chat: Cutting Through Rocks by Sara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni
Emmy-winning docmaker Carla Gutierrez (Frida) talks to Sara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni about their acclaimed feature doc about Iranian Sara Shahverdi, who, as the first elected councilwoman of her remote Iranian village, fearlessly breaks patriarchal traditions by training teenage girls to ride motorcycles and by stopping child marriages. “We wanted to see this conflict. And also we wanted to experience how the society was reflecting on Sara's offer to bring the change in the society,” says co-director Eyni.
Awards FYC: Come See Me In The Good Light by Ryan White
When folk at Sundance 2025 went to see Ryan White’s new doc, grief and death were presented in a way they simply weren’t expecting…with bucket-loads of humour. Which is why the film won the Festival Favourite Award. Come See Me In The Good Light, which tells the story of how poets Andrea Gibson and Megan Falley confront Gibson’s terminal cancer diagnosis, was originally suggested to White by producer and comedian, Tig Notaro. “Tig said ‘Andrea is one of the funniest people I’ve ever known in my entire life,’” the director tells BDE, “and I think there’s this opportunity to subvert the typical terminal illness genre.’”
Awards FYC: Predators by David Osit
In Predators, US director David Osit examines the rise and fall of the infamous TV programme To Catch a Predator, and asks some uncomfortable questions of its tangled legacy in the process. “I wanted to make a film that…really tried to unsettle you, to unmoor what your convictions were, and to make you have a different kind of experience with what you were watching,” Osit tells BDE, adding how the public reaction to the film has been what he has hoped for, “that it crawls under your skin.”
