Multi-award-winning UK production and distribution company Noah Media Group announced March 31 they have secured world sales rights to Stewart, a major new documentary about the legendary former Formula 1 World Champion, team owner and businessman, Sir Jackie Stewart.

A dreamlike documentary that weaves together the timeless, historical and experimental qualities of shooting on 16mm black-and-white film in its observation of mountain shepherds and their flock. The combined effect of image and sound is a mix of direct, ethnographic observation and dreamlike, manipulated reflection.

Since its launch by the International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk (ICFR) three weeks ago, the Emergency Fund for Filmmakers has already supported 108 filmmakers who are in direct danger because of the ongoing war in Ukraine. “But we would like to be able to help more fellow film practitioners in the midst of this terrible war. For that we are going to need more funds that are quickly available,” says ICFR board member and IDFA chief Orwa Nyrabia.

It is tough to strike the right tonal balance when it comes to looking at the impact of poverty on the vulnerable in society, but while Łukasz Kowalski’s humour in his new doc may well be pitch-black at times, the CPH:DOX Next:Wave film is also astutely compassionate as it dwells on staff and customers as they struggle to deal with their harsh lives.

A maelstrom of images poetically reflects Life on Earth in this short film by Danish video artist Jeppe Lange, co-directed by Google’s Image Recognition AI, at the same time providing a cosmic trip for the viewer. World-premiering in CPH:DOX New:Vision, it’s like an alien intelligence is sifting through images representative of the planet - and trying to make sense of them.

Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson’s documentary, about the so-called ‘Black Woodstock’ that was held in Harlem in 1969, garnered the Best Documentary Feature at dramatic Oscar ceremony held March 27. Ben Proudfoot’s Queen of Basketball, about women's hoops pioneer Lusia Harris and exec-produced by Shaquille O'Neal, received the nod for Best Short Doc.
